Ella Joy is a 17 year old girl that was left with cerebral palsy following a premature birth. From an early age it was evident that Ella was gifted with a vocabulary and understanding of the spoken word far beyond her years. She devours books and has a large collection. This painting represents the joyful heights she has been taken to by way of words, spoken written or sung. Ella loves singing and has an amazing memory to recite and sing lyrics. I placed Ella in the clouds as a representation of weightlessness and the carefree joyful spirit Ella processes, and as a contrast to her disability which keeps her grounded and unable to move with freedom.
